With the emergence of search engines in the mid-1990’s, the internet ballooned into a massive e-commerce and information machine. Website owners were creating valuable content and providing tremendous benefits to their visitors, and these website owners wanted to be compensated for their hard work. Early forms of online advertising like CPM or fixed placement started seeing competition from emerging, more accountable forms of online advertising, like affiliate marketing. So, what is affiliate marketing?
In August of 2011, I started my personal finance blog with the hopes of teaching people how to save money after reading a magazine that featured a personal finance website in one of their articles. Due to that website, I became extremely interested in personal finance blogs, and my interest in blogging just grew from there. Before August of 2011, I didn’t even know that blogs existed. I didn’t know what they were, I didn’t know that they could make money, or anything like that.

Enthusiasm. You don’t need to be bubbly and happy throughout your video — you should be yourself. But you should not speak in one tone and completely deadpan. Try to get people excited about whatever it is you’re video is about. Think of the things YOU like to see in YouTube videos and then try to do that the best you can. Remember, you will never please everyone, but you don’t have to.
In light of Facebook’s 2017 earnings call and in the interest of keeping this post as current as possible, we’ve updated the following statistics to reflect the newest information available. The original text remains intact, with updates noted above select sections.
If you’re just starting out, $100 a month could seem pretty good, but it takes a lot of work to get up t0 1k visitors a day – and if you get that many, you’re much better off monetizing via affiliate ads or ads for your own product.
High growth: Video is eating the web. It is estimated that by 2019, 80% of all content online will be video. YouTube’s own revenues have grown from an estimated $1 billion in 2012 to $9 billion in 2016. This means that not only will you get tons of views, your views – and revenues – will actually grow over time.
I’m thrilled. I loved it. I was actually looking to find something like that. Affiliate marketing isn’t easy. I’m learning that you have to invest a lot of energy, effort, and testing into this before anything works for you. It’s quite a process. And your guest post is surely a lightning rod.

Hey Amy–great informative post, here. I am going to look into a few of these and choose wisely. I want to make sure I am building a really solid readership first before bombarding people with ads, but I think your explanation was SPOT ON. Thanks for that. And much agreed on the comment above–there are some sites I don’t even BOTHER with b/c I just feel like all they do is post various links so they make a profit. Some to the point where I’m like, “wheres the CONTENT????” Even pioneer woman didn’t get to where she is if the content wasn’t there. People aren’t dumb–they can smell a scam a mile away.
Do How-to and review videos of your affiliate products. Create a number of videos with interesting content that people would like to share, SEO them and leverage on social sharing like facebook, twitter, reddit, pinterest etc…
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner makes over $50,000 / month from affiliate marketing. She is her own boss, and lives the dream life (on the road) with her hubby. She’s recently released a course on affiliate marketing, right from the what-it-is to the how-to-do-it (legally) – and the results her students (like me) have seen so far have been incredible.
Aim for quality over quantity. Having a vast network of affiliates will not necessarily help you earn more money. According to some experts, the key to successful affiliate marketing is to find the right affiliates that will drive the most results for your platform. Those affiliates may be big sites, small sites, or a combination of the two, but the most important thing is to build and maintain strong relationships with your chosen affiliates.
(Also, did you notice Michelle said you don’t even need to a blog to be a successful affiliate marketer?! I thought that part was pretty interesting. Meaning affiliate marketing would be a great side income option for anyone who was willing to learn to do it and put the effort into a social media account – like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.)
The more videos that you can get your viewers to watch, the more ads they will see. Similarly, if you can get users to come to your channel from other sites, such as Facebook, and have a long session viewing many videos, YouTube will give you more prominence in related videos.
But because of the consistency of creating videos, which as of today I have create 155 videos. All I have to do now is create 1 video every 2 weeks and my traffic is still consistently coming to that site.
The Ice Bucket Challenge was the past year’s best use of Facebook marketing, according to the social network, which just announced its ad award winners. It’s no surprise the viral campaign got so much praise—Mark Zuckerberg even participated.
I’ve seen examples where people have used high-demand, high-fee products and done things like advertising them using Facebook ads. Lots of affiliates won’t let you compete with advertising that they’re doing, and it’s not as honest or transparent as linking via blogs etc, but it shows it can be done.
As one of the biggest affiliate networks, Clickbank represents physical products as well as digital downloads. Be sure to research and test potential affiliate products the best you can before signing on. There’s a lot of junk on Clickbank, but there are high quality products as well.
Still haven’t made any money on my aforementioned website I was talking about above. However, I started another website and I AM making money with that. Two very different niches lol. The one I am making money with will HAVE to be a higher amount eventually, but I am happy to be making money at all because I have tried this whole affiliate thing for years and never made ANY money. So selling $300 worth of stuff and making $35 makes me ecstatic lol
